Hans Ittmann

Hans Ittmann (1914-1972)

Hans Ittman was born in Waalwijk (1914). In 1935 he began painting in Amsterdam while studying to become a public notary. In 1945 he abandoned his studies and devoted himself entirely to art.

Hans Ittmann lived in Paris from 1946 for a few years, thanks to a scholarship from the French government. Up to 1948, Ittmann was a student at the École des Beaux Arts. In 1948-1949 he worked in the atelier of the sculptor Ossip Zadkine.

In Paris, Ittmann had contacts with the artists of the post-war 'École de Paris'. Ittmann returned to the Netherlands in 1951 and was a member of the Dutch 'Creatie' group.

Ittmann did not like to date his work, because he wanted to be free to go back and forth in using the various styles he developed over time. Hans Ittmann died in Amsterdam (1972)
